After our first decade of teaching farriery, we recognized a significant gap in traditional farrier education: the complete lack of horsemanship training. We firmly believe that the most accomplished and highly respected farriers are lifelong students of four disciplines. In order of importance, they are: (1) horsemanship, (2) anatomy, (3) tool efficiency, and (4) blacksmithing.

Our program places a strong emphasis on all four areas, and we are excited to offer an optional Colt Starting Challenge for students who have never trained a horse from the ground up. If you are interested in reserving a two-year-old horse to train during your course, please indicate your interest on the application.

Over the years, a few students have taken horses from completely untouched to confidently trail riding by the end of the program. Students who can safely and effectively train a horse to lead, stand quietly for the farrier, accept a saddle, and progress to trail riding will be awarded a commemorative buckle in recognition of their achievement.
